with the trees that just seem to know.

Hope they are best friends forever.

They'll always have each other and memories of campfires, beach days and picking berries till their bellies were round.

Plump blueberries most treasured.

Running through the well worn paths even their great- great grandparents treaded.

Trees whispering, "All is well."

Usually my patience isn't as great when photographing my own children as it is with other children.

Today was different.

I took what I got.

And I was happy.

It felt nice.

This was Lola, plain and simple, that moment in time.

This shot is worth more to me than a hundred forced smiles.

This is real, life is real, and I'm big into keeping it real.

Just saw the movie The Help.

Thanks to that {wonderful} movie, I will tell this little girl everyday,

"You're kind, you're smart and you're important."

Plain and simple.

Oh, I love this family. This session was so much fun!

Beloved Angus. My two year old asks me almost every day about what Angus is up to. He sure is cute too!

Loved these pictures, the close-ups, the ones of this little gem laughing with the camera close by. But the next one melts my heart.

Seriously.

After the shoot, her job was done.

We were standing outside, meanwhile the artist takes up residence.

Look closely at her smile.

This is what life is all about.

The moments that happen when we aren't paying attention.

This woman is beautiful, inside and out.

We laugh together.

She gets me.

It's always a welcomed adventure to go out and meet/photograph complete strangers. You usually walk away feeling like you are one of the family. At least a distant cousin. Ha ha!

But let me tell you, it's also pretty special to spend time photographing people you call your friends. Interacting with their kids and recognizing how we are all connected...not only seeing but also sharing the beauty and uniqueness and innocence (and I could go on and on) in people has to be one of the greatest gifts of life. Ever.

Being with people in their castles, their little piece of the earth, their 'every day'.

The landscape consisting of little everyday things which really are the big things.

It might seem that I go on and on about how lucky I am all the time.

Here I go again.

I was able to spend some time with this beautiful family,

had lots of giggles,

a serious heart moment bearing witness to the joy the older siblings had for each other and especially their littlest brother...

(read: I almost cried and had a lump in my throat)

...then, as icing on the cake, the dad saved me from my backing- out of- the -driveway- predicament.

It was cold.

I had so much fun.

It wasn't awkward at all.

Sometimes when you photograph an old boyfriend and his family, the potential for awkwardness is just there.

But then again, we were five, and

I was so happy to have the opportunity to spend some time with this beautiful (and of course, handsome) family!

Ms. Charley made our time together very easy...I had to remind myself that she was only three because she was acting so much older!

I have a three year old and I know he would never have been so pleasant, for so long.

But comparing isn't fair so lets just say I was impressed and leave it at that! :)

Grade One Girl

So much to write about in these busy times. I promise I'll have more up soon, and some sneak peaks of photo shoots. It's been lots of fun this summer!

For now, my littlest girl is 18 months. This session was extra special. I am not usually working with a one to one ratio but I was able to sneak away with her for a bit. Normally she is competing for her fair share with her older brothers and sisters.

More one on one time in the future, it really is priceless.

This photo shoot was so much fun, I just had to share some of the moments!

What a joy!

Milla, you have such a sunny nature!

Strategically sitting in front of one of my favorite pieces of their furniture.

But obviously it's beauty pales in comparison to Milla's.

I'm pretty sure the whole neighborhood heard my Little Prince 'asserting himself'.

All I could think was....wow!

He couldn't believe the pups had deserted him so quickly....finding warmth in the dry house while he,

being a man of steel,

stuck it out in the freezing cold rain.

I asked him to come in. He said no.

I asked him again. He got animated.

I got my camera.

I got my camera while my three year old bellowed in the rain.

Twins!

Beautiful, healthy twins, Kate and Matthew. And they look nothing alike. How can two little ones who look nothing alike be equally adorable?! I jumped at the chance to take their pictures~ it would be my opportunity to finally meet them, and catch up a bit with their mama. They were born very early and both were under two pounds at birth and spent the first 115 days of life in hospital. I've been following their progress all the way. Lots of happiness and even some tears.

Couldn't you just get lost in those eyes?

Look at those baby blues.

Deep thinker. And so handsome.

Pure Sweetness.

Oh I just want to cuddle!

Except I wouldn't touch either of them the whole photo shoot.

Not even once.

I mean I could have.

But I couldn't.

I couldn't risk that I'd unknowingly give them a bug of some kind.

They've worked too hard to be healthy, and now they are.

Just Us Girls!

Getting out of the house with just one is quite a feat. But she really wanted to, and although I could see her softening as her little brother insisted he tag along, we held out and before we knew it were off on our own. What freedom! We held hands, and ran, walked, laughed and talked. All she wants to do is please me. And that breaks my heart. It's the kind of heart breaking that is accompanied with the screaming thought, "Don't be a people pleaser! Life's too hard as a people pleaser!"

That aside, I could feel my joy escalating with every clickety- click- click.

Ohhh..... I like it!

And isn't it lovely when you can show others life the way you see it, in full color?

These are the moments...

This photo shoot didn't go as planned. Not at all. Her older brothers and sister insisted on 'helping' me which definitely made things interesting. {read: frustrating} I had a vision and this was not it. For a while I let myself forget that these are the moments. They make me tick as a photographer, melt me as a mother. Without the wonderful chaos Lola probably wouldn't have had that quirky yet oh-so-her grin. When I think of Grace pulling out all the stops to get Lola camera ready; how she put on the butterfly wings and fluttered around the room, carrying out an impromptu performance made special for Lola, but equally for mom...I realize that I wouldn't, that I couldn't trade this for anything.

Might not have been what I visioned, but honey, my vision, had it turned technically perfect would have been lacking in character. I. Want. Character. If I have learned one thing these past seven years as a mother, kids bring a lot of character to your life. The beauty with kids is they rely much less on planning and much more on the now, which in the end is all we ever have. Yep, it's a real rush to capture a vision like a butterfly in a net but I mostly I'd rather leave the net out of it. There is a genuineness to these photos that I wouldn't trade for all the tea in China.

She was just so content. Not that she isn't one of the easiest babies on any given day. It's true, we've been spoiled. I always say God knew we needed one who would just fit in like the key to our house. But there was something about today. I slid open the van door prepared to hold her close for our icy (albeit short) trek to the house. She exuded peace. She stopped me in my tracks and then took me along for the ride, and I had to try to grab a hold of it. So I ran for my camera. I chase around contentment endlessly, and here it was staring me right in the face. It can't be found in things, but instead in moments. Telling me to pay attention. These little gifts are everywhere!
